Separation

I need some advice, fellow crafty people!

Alex and I recently moved our bedroom furniture around. We have a rather large bedroom (which we are extremely thankful for, since overall, our apartment is very small). So we were able to completely shift everything and create two separate spaces — a bedroom area, and a sewing/craft area.

The bed is now under the window (which the kitties love!). We placed one of our dressers at the foot of our bed, facing out, to create a visual separation between the two spaces, thus making our bedroom area more of a cozy “nook.” We’d like to hang something above the dresser — from the ceiling — to separate the spaces even more.

So…any ideas? The only thing we’ve come up with so far is a vintage window, but we’re looking for some other options.

The criteria for this “something” are as follows:

  • It must be attractive on both sides
  • We must be able to hang it from the ceiling
  • It will be hung over the dresser in the middle of the room, so it can’t be more than, say, three feet long by four feet wide (give or take)
  • The cheaper the better 🙂

I know how creative you all are, so I’d love some ideas!

Sounds like the perfect place for some faux stained glass!

    What about sheer fabric?

Shear fabric is a nice idea – what if you sewed pockets all over it with more shear fabric? I saw curtains like that a couple of years ago. You could then put things like pressed leaves and flowers, acorns, small stones, sea glass, or any other little treasure in the pockets.

Not sure if it would work in that space (maybe suspended form the ceiling?) but hanging swing frames like this might work:

If they’re like mine then they’re glass on both sides so you can have pictures facing each way. Mine was only a few bucks at a garage sale…seems they’re a bit pricer at stores :/

A collection of mobiles? Or see if you can find an “antique” window frame and clean it up/paint to fit your colors. All of the above?

I like the sheer fabric with pockets idea. Also, if you are a knitter, I have seen some great knitted curtains, for example in Mason-Dixon Knitting. I don’t know what the cats would do with something knitted, though?

On an episode of Domestic Blitz they made a hanging screen out of place mats – they were sturdy, sheer place mats – hard to describe but they had a sort white twigs or maybe paper woven within them. The were sewn together with fishing line and hung from the ceiling. I think it had a thin piece of dowel across the top to keep it straight. You can see it here – just fast forward to about 2:10 minutes and you’ll see it in the ‘study’. I just remember it looked so beautiful but still had an open feeling between the two rooms. http://channelnine.prev01.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=598241#

along the lines of one commenter, could you hang an old door instead of a vintage window? i have used the curtain idea before to separate a room, but with cats it might get complicated. i don’t know. i have a dog. 🙂

but the door could be hung sideways, and then you could paint it however you wanted. or you could even have it cut down if it was too long.

There is a really cool room divider made from recycled plastic bottles on Apartment Therapy. I don’t think it would be too hard to make.
